Therapy Dog Certification Class detailsInstructor: Fay Jitchaku
This class is designed to help potential therapy teams develop skills useful when participating in pet therapy activities. It is my hope that my students will register with a therapy organization and continue honing their skills to provide therapeutic emotional support to people in need. At the end of the course, an optional handling test from Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD) will be offered.
You can register with ATD by sending them a passing score from the handling test, two letters of recommendation, and passing a written open-book test. After assessing your progress, I can recommend your certification with ATD. And/or you can register with another therapy organization of your choice.
You do not have to take this course to join a therapy group, but the skills emphasized in this class will help anyone interested in therapy activities.
Note: Alliance of Therapy Dogs was previously known as Therapy Dogs Inc.
Pre-Requisites:
• Dog must be at least one year old
• Dog and handler must have had a close relationship for at least 6 months
• Dog must be obedience trained
• Handler can keep dog under control even without a leash
• Dog’s annual health exam must be current, including negative fecal exam
• Dog must be kept clean, well-groomed
• Dog must be friendly, reliable, well-mannered with people and other dogs
• Dog should be house-trained
• Dog must never have bitten a person
• Handler must use a 4 foot leash or shorter
• Prong collars are not allowed
• Passing the AKC CGC test is recommended but not required
• Attendance is mandatory. If you cannot come to every class, do not register for the class
until you can.

Timeline: Saturdays 10:30am - 11:30am (6 classes plus one test day) I will let you know if I have to postpone/cancel a training day. Class starts the same date as the Mililani obedience class session.
